Poplar Bluff Middle School students in art class, STEM and Life Skills participated in an activity with the Street Department on Wednesday, Dec. 15, adding colorful handprints to a fleet of snowplows.

“This way you can have a hand in getting back to school,” Poplar Bluff Street Superintendent Jerry Lawson said, jokingly.

The idea originally came from City Manager Matt Winters, who learned of another city initiating the community relations project during a recent state municipal conference. The City of Poplar Bluff brought three dump trucks with plow blade attachments to the Victory Lane campus.

Lawson’s wife Kelly, who serves as one of the Middle School’s art teachers, said her husband brought the idea up one evening, and she helped facilitate. “It kind of lets the kids learn a little about what the Street Department does,” she said.

Middle School Principal Dr. Josh Teeter agreed for the school to supply the acrylic paint in various colors. “I mean, I hope we don’t see the plows out this winter, but if we do, the students will get to see their handprints, which’ll be cool,” Teeter said.
