Middle schooler Gabby McGinty of Karmen Carson’s math class answered 42 multiplication problems correctly in one minute, winning the annual Math Counts championship, after studying nightly, confirmed her parents.

The weekly competition began with 314 fourth grade participants a month ago, concluding with three finalists in addition to the champion: Alantris Allen and Truston Alexander of the Middle School, and Somaria Simpson of Lake Road Elementary.

“It’s not who knows, it’s who’s the quickest,” explained facilitator Kathern Harris of the Butler County Community Resource Council on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the Poplar Bluff Municipal Library. “Because we already know who’s got the answer.”

The chairperson for the Children & Youth Succeeding in School Committee, Harris commended all the students for making it so far. The online math quiz went up to multiples of 12.
